Combating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), harassment and discrimination

Providing a respectful and safe learning environment is one of the fundamental responsibilities of a higher education institution.

That is why EM Normandie is taking action to prevent gender-based and sexual violence (GBV), harassment, hazing and all forms of discrimination, whilst training managers to be responsible and mindful of their actions.

Solidarity & Environment Association

A school committed to equality and against discrimination

EM Normandie is actively committed to promoting equality and tackling all forms of discrimination.

In particular, the School is:

  • signatory to the Regional Convention on Equality between Girls and Boys in the Normandy Education System (2020–2024);
  • an active member of the Diversity Commission of the French Conférence des Grandes Écoles;
  • involved in the Health and Prevention group of the CHEERS network in Le Havre;
  • a founding member of InEDi, a Caen-based initiative that coordinates awareness-raising and training activities across institutions on inclusion, equality and diversity.

It is also a partner in initiatives promoting equal opportunities, such as Wi-Filles run by the Fondation Agir Contre l’Exclusion Normandie (FACE).

Prevention: a key part of the school's strategy

From the moment they join the School and throughout their studies, students are required to adhere to the charter of the “6 EMiens commitments against sexist and sexual discrimination and violence and take part in awareness-raising activities designed to promote a culture of respect, responsibility and kindness.

As part of these initiatives, EM Normandie is organising an ‘Engaged for Equality Week’ in March, dedicated to preventing gender-based and sexual violence and tackling discrimination. Through information stands, participatory workshops, collaborative murals and meetings with experts from various organisations, this event encourages dialogue and raises awareness within the student community.

A collective effort

To strengthen prevention efforts within student societies, society leaders are trained to identify risky behaviour and promote a respectful environment, both on campus and at any events they may organise. “Care Teams” within their groups are deployed, in particular, during social events, to ensure that every student can thrive and enjoy student life in complete safety.

In order to implement an increasingly relevant and high-impact action plan, the School has chosen to combine internal training with external expertise. It therefore trains its students and staff whilst drawing on strong partnerships with specialist organisations such as Safe Campus, Égalité à la Page and Hally.

A chatbot called ‘Lilabot’ is available to students on this platform. It is provided by the Elle Caetera association, which aims to support young women who have experienced gender-based and/or sexual violence.

Sanctions to ensure accountability

EM Normandie is committed to handling every case with rigour and transparency in order to provide an appropriate response. Where a victim wishes to initiate an internal procedure and the facts are confirmed following an internal investigation, a disciplinary committee may be convened.

In accordance with the school rules, penalties may include expulsion from the school.
